Azur 650BD Blu-ray Universal Player

Cambridge Audio is thrilled to unveil the all-new 650BD. With support for all the latest surround sound formats and audiophile grade sonic performance, this lightning-fast, easy to use player will reproduce movies and music with all the passion their creators intended.

Featuring almost universal disc compatibility, the 650BD is equipped to handle CD, HDCD, DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, SACD and of course Blu-Ray discs.

Delivering stunning video reproduction is just half the story and the 650BD also excels in audio performance. 24/192kHz Digital to Analogue Converters and meticulous attention to audio circuitry design ensure that the 650BD can reproduce the dynamics and scale required for modern movie soundtracks whilst also being able to deliver a genuinely musical performance with either stereo or multi-channel music discs.

Meanwhile the latest surround-sound formats are supported including decoding of Dolby True HD, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS-HD Master Audio and DTS-HD High Resolution Audio in Stereo, 5.1 or 7.1 variants. In particular support for the true lossless Dolby True HD and DTS-HD Master Audio formats provides unprecedented audio fidelity from Blu-ray discs.

It's lightning fast!

For complete user convenience, the 650BD boasts power-up and loading speeds which are amongst the most impressive of any Blu-ray player currently available. And naturally, the widest possible array of HDMI, digital and analogue outputs are fitted for connection to screens and home cinema receivers of all types.

A fresh new look

The 650BD benefits from the highly regarded new Azur wrap-around casework design and its proprietary engineering is housed within a new low resonance, acoustically damped chassis. The Azur Navigator remote which also controls the matching 650R home cinema receiver completes the package.

Firmware Updates
May 2012

There are three new firmware updates, each corresponding to the three different Blu-ray region versions of 650BD;

  • Region A (North, Central and South American and Southeast Asian countries plus Taiwan, Japan, China Hong Kong, China Macau and Korea).
  • Region B (most European, African and southwest Asian countries plus Australia and New Zealand).
  • Region C (the remaining central and south Asian countries, as well as the People's Republic of China and Russia).

Firmware versions 650BDCU-09-1112, 650BD-10-1112 and 650BDRU-04-1112 (each corresponding to the 3 different Blu-ray regions around the world) were released in December 2010. Features of this update included;
  • Improved Blu-ray disc compatibility, including many new BD discs with new BD authoring techniques
  • Minor setup menu restructuring – see 650BD user manual addendum sheet
  • Subtitle Shift feature added – allows the user to adjust the vertical position of subtitles to better fit various aspect ratios
  • Improved AVCHD playback - Fixes a bug where the dim display setting is not remembered after power down when Ethernet is connected

650BD firmware update to 650BD-13-0327, 650BDCU-12-0327, 650BDRU-07-0327

Features of this latest update include the following;

  • Fixes a loading failure issue observed on some new Blu-ray releases, such as "Fringe" (Season 3, 2011), "Chuck" (Season 4, 2011), "Dexter" (Season 5, 2011), "Star Wars" and "Lord of the Rings". Due to these discs' resume function which is implemented in BD-Java, if disc playback of these discs was stopped or the disc ejected, the disc would then fail to load again the next it is played. The TV would get a black screen and the front panel display would remain at 00:00:00.
  • General disc compatibility improvements with new releases. Sample titles include "Contagion (BD, 2012)" and "Mildred Pierce (BD, 2012)".

The easiest way to update your player is to connect it to the internet, via the player’s Ethernet connection. The next time the unit powers up, the player will see that an update is available and will automatically prompt you to update the firmware for your 650BD (so long as firmware notification is ON in the Device Setup Menu). Alternatively, select Upgrade Firmware – Via Network, also within the Device Setup menu.

If it is not possible to connect your 650BD to the internet to update it, then you can also carry out the update via USB by following the instructions below. However, please note the following;

You must load only the correct region version for your 650BD. The 650BD is region locked for Blu-ray, and it is not possible to load the Region A update onto a Region B unit, for example.

Please first check the rear panel of your 650BD for confirmation of the player’s correct Blu-ray region – you will see A, B or C clearly marked within a hexagonal globe, just to the left of the mains inlet.

Important:

Loading the incorrect firmware version may corrupt your 650BD. Cambridge Audio accepts no liability for an incorrect firmware version being installed. If you are at all unsure about carrying out the update yourself, please contact your dealer, who will be happy to update your 650BD for you.
