Daily my Cambridge Audio system fills my house with glorious music and I'm dead happy about that.
Nick Mulvey used to be in a pretty big jazz band Portico Quartet but he decided to leave in 2011 to pursue his solo career, and aren’t we glad he did. Stemming from an education in music when he studied guitar in Cuba, he makes story telling lullabies that are not only beautifully written with honesty and emotion, but are also played with a perplexing level of expert musicianship - he works his way around an acoustic guitar with a hurried precision and acute detail but it somehow comes out as a warming encounter with a smooth and mesmerising rhythm.
We saw Nick play at Somerset House in 2015 at one of the Summer Series gigs. The iconic (after 15 years of the shows!) and almost surreal venue was the perfect backdrop for Nick’s joyous summer set. Our favourite track that night was probably the bouncing Cucurcu; it’s linked below for your happy ears.
A few weeks later we caught up with him when he was touring in France. Head over to our blog to see what he was up to...
