SX50 are a pair of compact hi-fi speakers designed to sit in confined spaces like bookshelves – hence the name. Despite their modest size, they output a confident, detailed, and rich stereo sound to fill smaller rooms with music as it was meant to be heard. It’s the combination of engineering quality and value, that make SX50 so hard to beat.
Hi-fi speaker engineering starts with the cabinet. Computer-aided design (CAD) was used extensively to refine SX50’s internal structures to ensure that while the drivers are vibrating with your music, the cabinet isn’t. This means that every millimetre of movement from the drivers is directed where it should be – at you.
SX50 speakers have a 135mm (5.25”) woofer made from treated paper. Hi-fi manufacturers have used it for years, as paper’s impressive strength-to-weight ratio is matched by excellent tonality – so music sounds rich, well defined, and real. 25mm (1”) soft dome tweeters, made from treated silk, take care of the higher frequencies – with the same balance of realism and refinement.
Our team in London took great care and attention when designing the crossovers in SX50 – as they’re responsible for ensuring that each driver receives the correct frequency. Accuracy of timing and stereo imaging depend on phase remaining completely linear, from top to bottom. The result? Your music sounds engaging, energetic and real.
Spin SX50 around to see that our attention-to-detail runs from front to back. There’s a neat bass reflex port that lets you fine-tune lower frequencies, by adjusting the position of the speaker with the wall. Immediately below are a pair of high-quality speaker binding posts (connectors), which can accept thick cable – with or without banana plugs.
New look SX50’s clean, understated design allows them to sit in a variety of spaces, and work well in all. Leave the grilles on to protect the drivers from little fingers, or to help blend in with your books. Alternatively, take them off to celebrate your great taste in music (and speakers).

The SX-50 speakers are just what I have been looking for as in sound quality and size. I was looking for a set of speakers that were not harsh or fatiguing in sound so thought I would give SX-50’s a try. So I ordered a pair and when the speakers arrived I was excited to get them out of the box and give them a listen. I hooked the speakers up to my Cambridge Audio AXA25 amplifier and after just a short time of listening I found out these speakers were just the sound I was looking for. The speakers produce clear highs and smooth non- fatiguing midrange to my ears with decent punch for their size on the bottom end. I am satisfied with the sound of the SX-50 speakers and look forward to enjoying them for many years to come.
The Cambridge Audio SX50 are compact bookshelf speakers that deliver a warm and natural sound, with well-balanced mids and a solid, punchy bass response for their size. Their rear bass-reflex port enhances the low end, giving them a surprisingly full-bodied presence despite their small footprint. The build quality is sturdy, with a clean and minimalist design that fits easily into most setups. While their treble is smooth and non-fatiguing, it may lack a bit of sparkle for those who seek more detail in the high frequencies. They require a powerful amplifier to fully express their potential. Overall, the SX50 provide a musical and immersive listening experience, especially appreciated by those who favor a rich and warm sound signature.
On good advice these were recommended and they do not disappoint. Sound from such a small speaker is excellent. These small speakers hold their own against much more expensive offerings and should be considered if you like big sound on a small budget.
Bought these for my (small) office, replacing a 20 year old pair of larger speakers. Very pleased with the tone and quality of the sound, a perfect pairing for the AXA35 amp.
