“BEST QUALITY EARPHONES I HAVE EVER USED”

Mark Bowers, Head of Music industry and Artist Development, BIMM

Charity

In February 2016 we launched our brand new in–ear monitors on a ‘pay what you choose’ basis to raise as much money for the UK-based National Foundation for Youth Music as possible. We raised an incredible £26,764.51 in just 21 hours. Thanks to this success, our in-ear monitors are back on sale in selected regions around the world, with 50% of proceeds going to charity!

In the U.K. we will be continuing our support of Youth Music. To find out more about Youth Music, please visit our blog - cambridgeaudio.com/blog/how-much-is-music-worth-to-you

In the U.S., we will be supporting two charities, Merit School of Music and Music Unites. For nearly 40 years, Merit School of Music has been providing music education to Chicago youth against the backdrop of limited, inconsistent funding for arts education in the city’s schools. The programs of the school, most of which are provided to students at little or no cost, provide a safe space for both musical and personal development.

Best Headphones I've Had

Steve

I've been through various brands (AKG, Sennheiser, Shure, RHA, Sony and others) and types (in-ear, on-ear, over-ear) of headphones for music on the move over the years but I've never been completely satisfied with any of them. Often I find the fit of in-ear models isn't right, despite many options for tips, or that they work themselves loose too easily or they are too flimsy. On-ear types become uncomfortable and over-ear phones just look ruddy stupid when you're out and about plus they are sweat boxes in anything but the coldest weather and a nuisance to carry around. Another big gripe with most headphones is that unless they are active noise cancelers then outside noise leaks in too easily which means you have to put the volume up, and that means sound leaks out which is an annoyance for others and a drain on your device battery.

I can safely say the SE-1's suffer none of these problems. The comply tips are extremely comfortable and for once they actually fit my ears properly so background noise is massively reduced meaning I can lower the volume so even if any sound could leak out (which it can't thanks to the fit), the volume is low enough that you cannot hear the phones unless they are within a few inches of your ears. I cannot emphasise enough what a difference this makes. The sound quality of these little units is phenomenal and better than many bigger headphones I've tried which means good bass response without being overwhelming, clear, punchy mid range and crisp highs too.

In addition, despite being machined aluminium, they feel very light and balanced in the ear so they do not easily work loose and neither do you notice their presence which is exactly what you want from headphones you walk around with.

If I had any criticisms, they would be:

- The cable could do with being just a tad longer. Not much, perhaps 5 or 10 cm.
- The cable is noisy when anything rubs or bangs against it and it always coils up.
- The carry punch is a bit small and I'm not keen on having to coil the cable so tight to get it in, especially as it contributes to my point above. Ideally I think I'd like to see braided fabric cable, even at the expense of the cable being a little thicker.

Overall though these are really very minor gripes for what is a terrific product.
